Children of the Ghetto A Study of a Peculiar People eBook Israel Zangwill
This is almost a sociological study in British Jewishness. I learned that a ghetto is not necessarily a dwelling for poor people. This holds true today -- almost a century after the book was written. The stories remind me of those of Isaac Bashevis Singer, but in a British setting.
The author's writing takes some time to become accustomed to, though it was worth the effort.

Children of the Ghetto A Study of a Peculiar People eBook Israel Zangwill Reviews
I learnt alot about those times and a family member depicted as a character. thank you for making the book available.
A wonderful review of Jewish life in those days in the East End Of London. Quite reminescent of life in the Staetles of Russia.
I enjoyed this book. .
Brilliantly written with incredibly welldrawn characters, the author delves into an eyeopening era of Jewish life cerca London. Well written with charm, humour and sympathy he takes us through their struggles to overcome crippling poverty and fully realize themselves as modern citizens while recognizing the true depth and power of Jewish tradition and ritual observance in their daily lives. Though written over a century ago, Israel Zangwill explores issues that for modern Jews, Conservative, Orthodox, Reform or Reconstructionist , pose a conumdrum and generate debate. Reading like a history of reformation era Jewry, for anyone wishing to deepen their understanding of the Jewish People, its a must read. As a Jew whose parental roots stretch back to 19th century London,
it was a mindblowing story.
